Whats New in May

Published 06/05/2010

Hi Everyone,

It has been a busy month. The Man from Snowy River Festival at Corryong was a great success. Unfortunately we missed the Falling Leaf Festival and Adelong Festival weekend due to ill health but we will be there next year. Markets have been really good as the weather has been brilliant. New stock is arriving daily with a good selection of longer winter necklaces. These have been well received at the markets and are now available through the web site. The fashion cycle has once again done full circle and simple wristbands are again in great demand by our Gen Y customers. Believe it or not, the very first leather plaited wristband was originally designed by our eldest son Glen, about 20 years ago. If he had royalties for every one sold since then we could all retire to the Bahamas. A pity it does not work like that. In fact the reverse is true in the areas we source our product. Quite often our designs are available “on the street” before we get our first delivery. That is just the nature of the business.

A daughter of one of the families we support in Bali has just finished her schooling and is about to enter the workforce. A very exciting time for all concerned. Its great to see what the kids can achieve when they have access to the small amounts of money required to pay the school fees to allow them to go through their senior years. Without those funds they simply drop out of the school system and find it really difficult to get meaningful employment. Even with a pass in their final year their prospects are so limited. It really gets down to who the parents know and how much the family can afford to pay to get the job. Unfortunately ability runs in third place.

MARKETS: We are now doing the Tuggeranong Homestead market on the second Sunday of the month in place of Ulladulla. Hopefully we have not jumped out of the frying pan into the fire. Weather is a huge factor at Ulladulla where the market is located on the wharf but I suspect it will also be a big factor at Tuggeranong where the wind can blow straight off the snow. All our other venues continue to perform with outstanding results.

WEB SITE; You will see some big changes on the web site over the next month as we move towards making it a lot more user friendly and brighten it up by removing a lot of the black backgrounds and replacing them with white, giving the site a much neater and cleaner look. We appreciate all the feed back you give us on every subject so please keep it coming. It really helps us to see things from your view point.

Happy Easter 2010 everyone

Published 31/03/2010

Hi everyone,

My sincere apologies for it being so long between newsletters. We have been frantically busy with markets and festivals as well as the web site sales. Great for us but not very informative or interesting for you.

I recently travelled overseas and was able to source many new designs through our long standing relationship with the Indonesian family we have supported since 1983. They continue to amaze me with the inventiveness they show in expanding and altering our initial design and spinning it off into completely different ranges of product.

From our market and internet sales where we have been testing price points through the sterling silver range of pendants, we have now purchased product that will sell, at reduced margin, for between $19 and $35 with the majority $19-$29. This represents exceptional value and is approximately 50% or more discount off normal retail. All the pendants come with a free display chain, some being silver plated.

Our market customers have immediately embraced the concept and our silver sales have quadrupled through those venues. A really pleasing result after a lot of research. The reason we can achieve these prices is illustrated below

HIGH St RETAILERS' CHAIN OF PURCHASING

manufacturer>wholesaler/exporter>importer>wholesaler>retailer

OZ ART no additional margins

manufacturer>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>we sell to you

A good example is a piece we sell for $39 was recently sighted in a local jewellers window for $165.

As you can see we are keeping both our outdoor units really busy with many events falling on the same days as our regular markets.

CREDIT CARDS. We have now added credit card facilities to our outdoor events and this has proven to be very popular.

PHONE ORDERS Don't forget you can also order by phone and use your credit card. We process the sale whilst you are on the line and issue you with an E-way receipt number. The process is completely secure and is handled by E-way and Westpac with no involvement or retention of credit card information by us.

INTERNET SALES. You can either direct deposit over the net, physically pay into our account, use your credit card, use Paypal or call us and we will process your payment over the phone. So there are plenty of options.

Wishing you all a great Easter and remember to keep safe on the roads.

Market Franchise opportunity

Published 26/10/2009

Hi to all our loyal customers,
We are quickly moving towards Summer and the styles are changing to reflect this. Most of our winter styles including the popular long wood bead styles slowed and the fresher, lighter colours of summer are being snapped up in preparation for the warmer months just around the corner. Christmas present buying is becoming more popular by the day. Neutrals and black are always really popular choices for presents as they are able to be matched with multiple outfits. Another two colours that fall into this category and are often overlooked are Moonstone and Paua shell. Both of these have the extraordinary ability to pick up any contrasting colour that is exhibited in the chosen outfit. Well worth considering when choosing a present for a friend or relative whose fashion tastes are not clear to you.

E BAY             We are currently considering our e-bay presence as despite vastly increased sales the net result continues to be financially disappointing as the various fees consume the funds generated by sales. We are unfortunately a victim of our own pricing policy. Because we maintain a very low retail price, courtesy of no middle man margins, our product is not able to offset the fixed fees for listing, sales and banking (Paypal, E-way) each sale attracts. If the products were higher priced the situation would be quite different, but that is not what we are about. The website traffic continues to grow and the fee formula is quite different as we control most of the activity ourselves.

FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITY   The markets are continuing to grow and we are now planning to franchise our market activities. This will be explained in detail in the next newsletter. Anyone who has time on weekends and one night per week (party plan) may be interested in this opportunity. From our experience this is probably going to be those of you from the Baby boomer generation or Gen X with the kids off your hands. Returns on investment of both money and time will be really good. The only real requirement will be the ability to sell and more importantly up sell ."would you like fries with that".  Everything required to operate the franchise will be included in the set up. This will be contained in a purpose built trailer which is easily converted back to a standard high side 8 x 5 trailer for other uses.
